are you ready for the country?

on a serious neil young kick these days.
been listening to Harvest on repeat.

the song Out On The Weekend reminds me of a good friend.
here are the lyrics:

Think I'll pack it in
and buy a pick-up
Take it down to L.A.
Find a place to call my own
and try to fix up.
Start a brand new day.

The woman I'm thinking of,
she loved me all up
But I'm so down today
She's so fine, she's in my mind.
I hear her callin'.

See the lonely boy,
out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay.
Can't relate to joy,
he tries to speak and
Can't begin to say.

She got pictures on the wall,
they make me look up
From her big brass bed.
Now I'm running down the road
trying to stay up
Somewhere in her head.

The woman I'm thinking of,
she loved me all up
But I'm so down today
She's so fine she's in my mind.
I hear her callin'.

See the lonely boy,
out on the weekend
Trying to make it pay.
Can't relate to joy,
he tries to speak and
Can't begin to say.

best fiction book i've read in a long time.....

i recently finished Donald Ray Pollock's The Devil all the Time. i read a great review of it in an issue Elle Magazine months ago but forgot about it until recently when I renewed my library card. i placed it on hold at the library and because of the long hold list, finally picked it up 6 weeks later. i read the book in two days. i couldn't put it down. if you're a fan of flannery o'connor, you'll probably like this book.

i'm just going to copy the amazon.com description because i think my version wouldn't do it justice.......
Set in rural southern Ohio and West Virginia, The Devil All the Time follows a cast of compelling and bizarre characters from the end of World War II to the 1960s. There’s Willard Russell, tormented veteran of the carnage in the South Pacific, who can’t save his beautiful wife, Charlotte, from an agonizing death by cancer no matter how much sacrificial blood he pours on his “prayer log.” There’s Carl and Sandy Henderson, a husband-and-wife team of serial killers, who troll America’s highways searching for suitable models to photograph and exterminate. There’s the spider-handling preacher Roy and his crippled virtuoso-guitar-playing sidekick, Theodore, running from the law. And caught in the middle of all this is Arvin Eugene Russell, Willard and Charlotte’s orphaned son, who grows up to be a good but also violent man in his own right.

here's a great article about Donald Ray Pollock. he didn't start writing until his forties and how he came to write is really inspiring.

american stars 'n bars......

i had forgotten about this album until a friend recently reminded me.....been listening to it none stop all day. it's absolutely one of my favorite album covers.

each song struck a chord with me today and brought up some special memories, especially Hold Back The Tears and Like A Hurricane.

the lyrics to both songs remind me of someone who is dear to my heart.

Like a Hurricane:
Once I thought I saw you
in a crowded hazy bar,
Dancing on the light
from star to star.
Far across the moonbeam
I know that's who you are,
I saw your brown eyes
turning once to fire.

You are like a hurricane
There's calm in your eye.
And I'm gettin' blown away
To somewhere safer
where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
I'm getting blown away.

I am just a dreamer,
but you are just a dream,
You could have been
anyone to me.
Before that moment
you touched my lips
That perfect feeling
when time just slips
Away between us
on our foggy trip.

You are like a hurricane
There's calm in your eye.
And I'm gettin' blown away
To somewhere safer
where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
I'm getting blown away.

You are just a dreamer,
and I am just a dream.
You could have been
anyone to me.
Before that moment
you touched my lips
That perfect feeling
when time just slips
Away between us
on our foggy trip.

You are like a hurricane
There's calm in your eye.
And I'm gettin' blown away
To somewhere safer
where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
I'm getting blown away.

Hold Back The Tears:
Hello, my old friend.
It's good
to see you smiling.
You've been around so long,
you must be strong.
And single life really
has its fine points,
Like friends to help you out
when things go wrong.

Hold back the tears
That you've been cryin'.
Push off the fears
When they come around.

Hold back the tears,
And keep on trying.
Just around the next corner
May be waiting your true love.

Two lying fools,
And then four cryin' eyes,
Counting on one another
to survive.
Crazy love
must surely have this pain,
If getting up
means going down again.

Hold back the tears
That you've been cryin'.
Push off the fears
When they come around.

Hold back the tears,
And keep on trying.
Just around the next corner
May be waiting your true love.

frances bean...

back in august, hedi slimane of dior homme legend took some stunning photos of kurt cobain and courtney love's daughter, frances bean.

the fashion world raved about these photos and they were posted all over the internet. i agree, the photos are dark, moody, and beautiful. in several of them, frances bean reminds me of brody dalle from the distillers (or i guess it's brody homme now).

what struck me is how radically different she looks from previous pictures. i guess it's been two years since she posed for harper's bazaar and she probably has lost all her "baby fat" but the transformation is mind-blowing to me. the shape of her face looks completely different.

all i can think about is how much weight she has lost and how much self-control she must have to have done so. it seems like she didn't attract this much attention until she became ultra-thin.

rock on, gold dust woman.....

i've seen stevie once before but it was at a shitty venue in englewood, co.
tonight, i get to see her at red rocks and i can't wait. it's going to be magical.
i meant to do a post on her ages ago but never got around to it so now couldn't be more perfect.
she's one of the most important female rock and style icons there is.
i remember listening to her albums with my mom when i was a little girl.
i obsessed over the bella donna album cover for years.
i feel so f'ing lucky to get to see her tonight at one of the most beautiful music venues in the world.
